The Amplification Project Highlights the Importance of a Great Idea in Digital Advocacy

Fight for the Future's digital advocacy was a driving force behind the successful Stop SOPA campaign.

For all digital advocates seeking some inspiration, I highly recommend watching a panel from the 2012 MIT-Knight Civic Media Conference titled “Civic Action On and Offline: IRL+RT FTW!”. The discussion explored how activist movements gain traction, and how tactics to build a movement differ online and offline. Panelists discussed the efficacy of various civic activism tactics, such as occupying physical space, creating an Internet meme that goes viral, and circulating online petitions. A central point of discussion was the question: How do physical actions and online activism interact or replace one another?

Beyond the advocacy community, many people contemplate how the Internet has changed our lives and changed the way we communicate. Advertisers adapted quickly to the digital age, staying ahead of the curve and tracking our every move online to get their messages in front of us. In this competitive environment, digital advocates without resources to hire a digital marketing department can easily feel defeated. When you are a non-profit or a community organizer trying to get your message out, how do you compete with for-profit organizations that have incredible resources?

Holmes Wilson made this important point during the civic action panel, reminding the audience that anything can become viral on the Internet if it sparks enough interest. Wilson should know about the importance of a great idea, because Fight for the Future was a major force behind the Stop SOPA campaign that mobilized an incredible opposition movement to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Wilson’s point shed light on the questions the panel was wrestling with, and it is a particularly good piece of advice for any digital advocate to remember.

The Internet can be an intimidating place for small organizations looking for ways to amplify their message amid overwhelming competition. Fortunately, it costs nothing to open an account on the Internet’s most popular sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Pinterest, and countless others.  More importantly, it costs nothing for others to share your work on these outlets. A great idea, and strategic use of free digital tools, will enable you to maximize your resources and capitalize on your passion for an issue.

Stay focused and get brainstorming, because a great idea can be the spark that makes your digital advocacy campaign catch fire.
